Diversity means?

Diversity of what? The definition can be defined as ‘understanding that each individual is unique and recognising our individual differences’. But society generally attributes diversity to very specific characteristics – for example ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability or gender.

But we are all beautifully different – and that should be embraced. I am not going to start a list of labels, just because it defeats the point of the blog. Making sure that your teams represent the community you work for is essential. If not, then you risk exclusion of talent, customers and success. Just allow people to be themselves, it’s when you will get the best from them.

There are so many 'norms' in our world, which means that we restrict the enrichment of our businesses and life, because we don’t truly allow people to bring their own brilliance to life.

Social media plays a big part in defining norms, look or stereotypes sometimes this is done positively and others not so. As an individual, employer or friend – stop and think about how you allow those around you to be themselves. Do you truly create an environment that is open and encouraging of difference?

Research shows that the diversity of thought can take a business or team to brilliance. Allowing everyone to bring their thoughts and ideas to the table, can be the difference between success and failure. How do you engage across your teams to bring in everyones creativity and input.

Kindness, thoughtfulness and care are some of the most important traits that we can use in our daily lives.

Equality – ‘the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities.

Embrace the difference – it’s what makes the world very special.

Great message Adrian. Promoting those values starts with children from a very early age. They are open, honest and impressionable. Teach them well and give them good role models to imitate. Children teach us as much as we teach them!
